Sallaum Lines and Marine Conservation Institute Announce Partnership

[Kägiswilerstrasse, 15 January 2024] – Sallaum Lines, a prominent international ocean transportion company, and Marine Conservation Institute, a leading non-profit organization committed to ocean conservation, proudly announce their collaboration with Ocean Revolution Moçambique to provide a patrol boat for the Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network. This strategic partnership aims to enhance local marine conservation efforts, support sustainable practices, and empower the Inhambane Bay communities in Mozambique.

“At Sallaum Lines, we’re dedicated to fostering a harmonious relationship between maritime commerce and marine conservation. Our partnership with Marine Conservation Institute and Ocean Revolution Moçambique for the Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network emphasizes our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. By providing a patrol boat, we are actively contributing to the protection of vital marine ecosystems and empowering local communities in Mozambique to take an active role in conservation.

This initiative aligns with our vision of sustainable practices and contributes to the global effort to preserve our oceans. Through such collaborations, we aim to achieve a future where economic development and environmental stewardship work together for a healthier ocean for future generations,”
stated Natalie Sallaum, Head of Sustainability.

The vessel secured through this partnership will support ecological monitoring and research within the Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network as well as enforcement of the network’s twelve community-managed marine protected areas. The Community Conservation Network protects mangroves, seagrass beds, and other estuary and wetland spaces throughout the bay that provide breeding, nursery, and foraging areas for fish, and threatened and endangered species, including dugongs, dolphins, and sea turtles.

“The acquisition of this vessel means a lot to Ocean Revolution Moçambique as well as to all the communities in Inhambane Bay with whom we work,” said Antonio de Sacramento Cabral, Program Director of Ocean Revolution Moçambique. “We would like to take advantage of this opportunity to improve our conservation work and strengthen our relationship with our partners. I would like to thank Sallaum Lines and Marine Conservation Institute for their great support in this journey; we are committed to making good use of the vessel.”

Marine Conservation Institute has collaborated with Ocean Revolution Moçambique through its Blue Sparks program since 2019, supporting community-led marine conservation efforts within Inhambane Bay.

“The partnership with Sallaum Lines represents a significant step forward in our mission to conserve and protect marine ecosystems,” said Dr. Lance Morgan, President of Marine Conservation Institute. “By funding this new boat, we are empowering the local stewards of Inhambane Bay, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”

The collaboration between Sallaum Lines, Marine Conservation Institute, and Ocean Revolution Moçambique underscores their shared commitment to effective marine protected areas with local leadership. By investing in the Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network, the partners aim to make a positive, lasting impact on marine conservation that will contribute to local communities’ long-term health and welfare.

About Marine Conservation Institute

Marine Conservation Institute, founded in 1996, works in the U.S. and globally to seek strong protection for at least 30% of the ocean by 2030, for us and future generations. Our focus on protecting the ocean’s most important places follows several lines of work: identifying and advocating for strong marine protected areas; improving laws and other tools to better conserve marine biodiversity; catalyzing effective conservation by recognizing and elevating the best marine protected areas as Blue Parks; and accurately reporting on global conservation efforts with our Marine Protection Atlas (MPAtlas.org).

Blue Park Awards were established by Marine Conservation Institute to encourage high quality marine protected areas (MPAs) that safeguard marine wildlife, secure critical habitats, promote resilience, and ensure the inspiring beauty of our oceans for future generations. The effort aims to assemble an effective network that sustains marine life and ecosystems globally. In addition to awarding new Blue Parks, Marine Conservation Institute has launched collaborations – Blue Sparks – with local MPA champions in countries around the world to support their efforts to achieve effective MPAs. The Blue Parks initiative is endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade.
